Report from the Field: India

There are an estimated 18 million slaves in India.

Real slaves: under the threat of violence, unable to walk away. Children and women are raped for profit. Families are forced to make bricks and work in construction. Children are forced to make carpets. Human beings created in God's image are forced to work against their will in the fishing and agriculture business. 

On June 22, IJM helped rescue a 9 year old girl from a brothel. 9 years old.

But. . . there is hope! 

India's Freedom Fighters

ICCM's Stand for Children has helped educate at least 3,000 children and their families and caregivers about the dangers of human trafficking. Pictured above is ICCM director Nayan (center) with the boys at the Abernath Hostel. 

Jeevan Aadhar and Oasis are India-based organizations providing hope and healing for survivors. Abhishek Ahaley, a staff member of Jeevan Addhar (pictured below), is a great example of a young man making a profound difference for survivors. 



In 2015 IJM helped rescue 900 young women and trained thousands of police officers. A few months ago, they worked with Indian police to rescue 564 children, women and men from forced labor slavery at a massive brick kiln - their largest anti-slavery operation to date.

The problem is great. But God is greater.

On my visit to India in August, I gained the approval of the Free Methodist Bishops and others to begin launching the Set Free Movement in all three of India's annual Free Methodist conferences. 

There is much to think through, and many steps to get to where we are going, but we have a tremendous opportunity to help make significant impact.
